History of the Murray River Retriever
The Full Story

The Murray River Retriever is a lesser known iconic true blue Aussie breed of dog which has been around since the early to mid 19th century. A lack of documented history was typical of many landrace dog breeds, therefore their true make up remains unconfirmed at this stage. This hardy retriever is often confused with the Curly Coated Retriever, however, there are significant differences between the two. The Murray is typically a smaller frame and come predominantly in liver colour, although there are some black Murrays (rare). The Murray also has longer spaniel type ears unlike the Curly Coated Retriever who has shorter ears with shorter curl length. In 2014 the Murray River Retriever was admitted on to the ANKC sporting register as a herding dog, although their true talents lie with retrieving. Many owners like to hunt with their Murray's as they are especially good at retrieving ducks and working with other game, however due to not reaching full ANKC pedigree status they are not officially recognised by Game Management Authority as a Gun dog. We therefore do not encourage hunting with your Murray until this status has been reached and they are legally permitted to be used for hunting. Murray's are now being recognised for their human support abilities with many being successfully trained as diabetic alert and registered assistance dogs for many human issues including mental health support for anxiety and PTSD type illnesses. Rather than see this true Australian breed die out once hunting is no longer permitted and gun laws tighten further, we at the Australian Murray River Retriever Pets Association Incorporated chose to celebrate and recongnise ALL of their talents without pigeonholing them into a potenially dying sport.

Rehoming Service
Tackling the Issue
Here at the Australian Murray River Retriever Pets Association Incorporated we offer rehoming support for anyone who can no longer keep their Murray. We understand that having to make the tough decision to rehome your dog can be extremely difficult. We have successfully rehomed many Murrays for a variety of reasons. When rehoming with us, we carefully select only the best homes and encourage new owners to keep us regularly updated with photos and stories of their new new addition. Our rehoming policy ensures all rehomes are desexed in line with professional rehoming organisations. We strive to take every precaution to ensure your Murry looking for their new home does not end up being exploited or misused in horrible breeding programs or abusive homes. New owners are given a contract to sign which states the original owners/breeder must be the first point of contact should things not work out, and of course our association is here for the life of the animal. We do charge a rehoming fee which is designed to cover foster care and veterinary expenses such as desexing, vaccinations and whatever the Murray needs. Sometimes professional training is required for any behavioural issues and this also costs money to do. Each rehoming fee is different depending on the dogs individual requirements. All rehomes are publically made available on our Facebook page and you can be assured there are no secrets or dodgy dealings. We are open and honest with everything we do and encourage our whole community to be involved.

Ethical Breeding Standards
Tackling the Issue
Due to an overwhelming amount of indiscriminate breeding practices and backyard breeders, we at the Australian Murray River Retriever Pets Association Inc and Rehoming only register, support and certify breeders who comply with our strict breeding standards. These have been devised in line with other pedigree organisation standards and ensure the best ethical and welfare standards are upheld. You can view a short you tube video which gives a quick easy to follow run down of what our breeders need to do and what you can expect from one of our registered breeders https://youtu.be/6jCkRLtShtU
